A youth group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State has formally requested that two political heavyweights—Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and former governor, Senator Adamu Aliero—refrain from contesting the 2027 senatorial election.
Operating under the name "Concerned Youths of Kebbi Central Senatorial District," the group issued an open letter to both senior politicians, advocating for younger representation in the upcoming electoral cycle.
Mohammed Aliyu Ambursa, who serves as the group's spokesperson, emphasized that their request aims to foster political renewal and ensure youth inclusion within both the party structure and state governance.
"We urge you both not to contest the Kebbi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections," Ambursa stated in the letter. He further explained that both leaders have already served their terms and should now create space for emerging leaders, particularly from the younger generation of party members.
The group clarified that their demand forms part of a larger initiative to reposition the APC in Kebbi State as the party prepares for the next election cycle. This move reflects growing calls across Nigeria for generational transition in political leadership.
Senator Bagudu, who currently serves in President Tinubu's cabinet, previously governed Kebbi State before moving to the Senate. Similarly, Senator Aliero has held multiple high-profile positions including state governor and federal minister before his current senatorial role.
Political analysts note that this development highlights the increasing assertiveness of youth groups within established political parties, as younger Nigerians seek greater representation in governance structures.
Neither Senator Bagudu nor Senator Aliero has publicly responded to the youth group's demands as of press time.
