The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, CP Adamu Abdullahi Ellenman, has refuted allegations that 35 women and their children recently rescued from Boko Haram captivity are being detained, clarifying that they are instead under protective custody and receiving proper care.
Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Niger State Police Command, led by DSP Ahmed Saidu, intercepted vehicles in July that were transporting the women and children along routes through Tegina, Madaka, Birnin Gwari, and Yauri in Kebbi State. During the operation, three drivers were arrested while the women and children were rescued from the terrorist group.
Speaking to journalists in Minna, CP Ellenman emphasized that the rescued individuals are being well taken care of. "As I am talking to you now, these women and their children are all living well and comfortably in protective custody," he stated.
The Commissioner further explained that the state government has provided essential support for the victims. "The government has provided all of them with mattresses and their basic needs. The government has done so much by providing money for their feedings. So, the issue of not taking care of these women is not true and is far from the truth," he added.
Ellenman assured the public that the safety and well-being of the victims remain a priority, while urging community leaders and relatives to refrain from spreading unfounded rumors about the condition of the rescued individuals.
"All we are doing is giving the victims reorientation before returning them back to their respective community," the Commissioner explained, highlighting the rehabilitation process being undertaken to help the victims reintegrate into society.
The rescue operation represents a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and protect vulnerable populations in Nigeria's northern regions, where Boko Haram has maintained a presence for over a decade.
