A violent clash between herdsmen and villagers at Kudu Village Market in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has resulted in the death of one person and left two others injured, police authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Sunday, June 9, around 4:00 p.m. during a market day gathering, when a group of eight herdsmen from Fulani Camp in Gbete Village allegedly confronted three residents from Uppo Village.
Details of the Fatal Confrontation
According to security reports, the victim, identified as 25-year-old Chede Japo, was stabbed in the neck during the altercation. Police officers from Mokwa Division responded swiftly to the scene and rushed Japo to the General Hospital in Mokwa, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Two other individuals—Shehu Usman and a man identified only as Abubakar—sustained injuries during the clash and are currently receiving medical treatment at the same hospital. Japo's remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Suspects Identified
Security expert Zagazola Makama reported on his X handle that eight individuals have been identified in connection with the altercation. They include Suka Alh. Sani, who allegedly stabbed the deceased, along with Adamu Mukwake, Mohammed Abubakar, Umaru Usman, Mohammed Garba, Umaru Garba, Usman Garba, and Abubakar Majo.
Police authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the violence and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
This incident adds to the growing concerns about farmer-herder conflicts in various parts of Nigeria, which have resulted in numerous casualties and displacement of communities in recent years.
