Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has expressed sadness over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, stating that his demise should serve as a profound lesson to those currently in positions of power.
In a statement issued on Monday by the factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze extended condolences to Northern leadership, Buhari's immediate family, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Pan-Igbo body acknowledged Buhari as a disciplined soldier and a leader revered by many in the Northern region. However, they noted that in the Southeast, memories of his 2015-2023 administration remain contentious.
"While we extend our forgiveness, it must be unequivocally stated that the wounds inflicted upon the Igbo people during his tenure have left an indelible mark that is challenging to erase from our collective memory," the statement read.
Ohanaeze highlighted several grievances, including what they described as systematic victimization of Igbo people, alleged government silence on attacks by Fulani herdsmen against Igbo communities, and controversial statements made by the former president that they claim fostered distrust.
The organization also pointed to what they perceive as disparate treatment between Boko Haram terrorists and Northern bandits who were allegedly reintegrated into society, while peaceful Biafra agitators remained incarcerated. They specifically mentioned Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested twice under Buhari's administration and remains detained.
"The passing of General Buhari must serve as a moment for reflection and introspection for those in positions of power," the statement continued. "His legacy, as perceived by many Nigerians, is largely regarded as subpar; this realization should resonate profoundly with leaders across all levels of governance from the presidency to the most junior councilor."
Ohanaeze concluded by emphasizing that Nigerian politicians should understand that power is temporary, and their legacies will ultimately be judged by history and the people they serve.
