Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed profound sadness over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a courageous leader who exemplified selflessness and patriotism throughout his service to Nigeria.
Buhari, who served Nigeria both as a military head of state and as a democratic president, died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Okechukwu Eze, Jonathan stated that he received the news with "a heavy heart and profound sense of national loss."
"President Buhari was a notable leader, patriot, and elder statesman who served our beloved nation as both a military head of state and president to the best of his abilities," Jonathan said.
The former president highlighted Buhari's reputation for honesty and discipline, noting that these qualities earned him admiration across all strata of Nigerian society.
"He will be remembered as a courageous leader, a disciplined officer, and a committed public servant who made considerable contributions towards the peace and progress of our dear nation," Jonathan continued.
"The late president was deeply admired across all strata of society for his decency, integrity, and exemplary life of service. As a leader, he was selfless, committed to duty, and served the country with character and a deep sense of patriotism."
Jonathan acknowledged the personal dimension of the loss, stating, "In his passing, Nigeria has lost one of its foremost leaders, and I have lost a respected colleague and elder."
He emphasized that Buhari's legacy would endure in the hearts of those who value sacrifice, integrity, perseverance, and devotion to national ethos.
On behalf of his family and the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, the former president extended his "heartfelt condolences" to Buhari's immediate family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians mourning the loss.
"May Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Jannatul Firdaus," Jonathan concluded.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London to convey Buhari's remains back to Nigeria, while the Katsina State government has declared a public holiday to mourn the former president.
