Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has paid tribute to immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari following the announcement of his death on Sunday.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Omokri acknowledged Buhari's service to Nigeria during both peacetime and war, describing the late president's legacy as "worthy of emulation in many areas."
"From God we came, and to Him we return. My family and I pray that Almighty God grants President Muhammadu Buhari al-Jannah firdaus. May his sins be forgiven, and may As-Sami, (The All-Hearing), grant his family the fortitude to bear their loss. He served Nigeria in peacetime and war and left a legacy that was worthy of emulation in many areas," Omokri wrote.
The death of former President Buhari was confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements on X on Sunday. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not been fully disclosed at the time of this report.
In response to the development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to accompany the late president's remains back to Nigeria for burial rites according to Islamic traditions.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria's president from 2015 to 2023, had a long history of public service including his time as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985. His recent administration focused on anti-corruption efforts, security challenges, and infrastructure development across the country.
Omokri's tribute is particularly notable given his role as a prominent critic of the Buhari administration during its tenure, highlighting the solemn respect often accorded to former leaders regardless of political differences.
