Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has suggested that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his supporters may soon defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), potentially reshaping Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ahmad made this revelation on Thursday night via his X (formerly Twitter) account, following Vice President Kashim Shettima's curious reference to Kwankwaso as "NNPP-APC" during a public event.

"If nothing else, Vice President Shettima referring to Senator Kwankwaso as 'NNPP-APC' is a strong signal that the NNPP leader and his teeming supporters are on the verge of joining our great party, the APC," Ahmad wrote.

The former presidential aide further emphasized that such a political realignment would foster unity in Kano State, stating: "This will help to have a politically united Kano, something long desired for the progress and stability of our state."

Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, has maintained a significant political following, particularly in Nigeria's northwestern region. His potential defection could significantly alter political calculations ahead of the next electoral cycle.

While there has been no official confirmation from Kwankwaso or the NNPP regarding these speculations, political observers note that such a move would not be unprecedented in Nigeria's fluid political environment, where cross-carpeting between parties is common.

The timing of these rumors coincides with increasing political maneuvers across party lines as politicians begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections. VP Shettima has previously referred to Kwankwaso as "my brother" despite their different party affiliations, suggesting existing cordial relations between the APC leadership and the NNPP founder.

Political analysts suggest that if this defection materializes, it could significantly strengthen the APC's position in Kano, a crucial state with substantial electoral votes, while potentially weakening opposition coalitions being formed to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
