The Zone 9 Police Command in Umuahia has initiated a comprehensive investigation into allegations of a N1.5 million extortion by officers from its Special Intelligence Arms Recovery Unit, following a viral video posted by Harrison Gwamnishu.
According to a statement released by SP Iheanetu Bruno Chukwudera, the Zonal Command's Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Kanayo Uzuegbu personally ordered the investigation to determine the veracity of the claims and identify any officers involved in the alleged misconduct.
"The AIG has directed a thorough investigation to verify the claim, identify those involved, and ensure that any officer found culpable faces appropriate sanctions," the statement read.
The press release emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining discipline and professionalism within its ranks, with AIG Uzuegbu stressing that the Force has zero tolerance for unprofessional or corrupt practices.
The complainant has been urged to come forward with any additional information that could aid the investigation and facilitate a swift resolution of the case.
SP Chukwudera also used the opportunity to encourage public confidence in the Zonal Command, calling on citizens to report any instances of misconduct by police personnel to ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken.
This investigation comes amid growing concerns about police conduct and accountability across Nigeria, with various civil society organizations calling for comprehensive police reforms to address issues of extortion and misconduct.
