Abeje C. Egwa, the immediate past State Women Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, has officially resigned her membership from the party, citing prolonged internal crises and unresolved divisions as the primary reasons for her exit.
In her resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Okete Ward in Otukpo, Egwa expressed that her decision to leave the party was not made lightly, considering her deep commitment to the party's ideals and vision over the years.
"I write to formally tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) effective immediately. This decision has not come easily, as I have been deeply committed to the ideals and vision of the party," Egwa stated in her letter.
She further explained that "the prolonged internal crises and unresolved divisions within the party has made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my involvement in good conscience."
Despite her departure, the former Women Leader expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the opportunity to serve, noting that it had been a privilege to contribute to the growth and development of the party. She also emphasized that she would always value the experiences and relationships built during her tenure.
Egwa concluded her resignation letter by expressing hope that the PDP would overcome its current challenges and continue to play a meaningful role in Nigeria's democratic journey.
Her resignation comes amid ongoing reports of factional disputes within the Benue State chapter of the PDP, which has seen several high-profile members leaving the party in recent months. Political analysts suggest this development may further weaken the party's structure in the state ahead of future electoral contests.
The PDP in Benue State has been grappling with internal leadership tussles, with reports of suspensions and counter-suspensions among key party figures, including allegations involving former Governor Samuel Ortom.
As of the time of this report, the PDP state leadership has not issued an official response to Egwa's resignation.
