The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly stated that President Bola Tinubu will be removed through the ballot box and not through bullets, dismissing insinuations that the coalition is plotting to truncate Nigeria's democracy.

ADC's Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this clarification on Wednesday in response to allegations from the Presidency suggesting that opposition parties were planning to overthrow the current administration.

The controversy began when Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga claimed via social media that the opposition had formed a coalition with the intention of overthrowing President Tinubu's government before the 2027 elections.

Abdullahi described Onanuga's comments as "reckless and unsubstantiated," suggesting that such remarks indicate the administration's intention to intimidate and repress opposition political leaders in Nigeria.

"If anything, it potentially lays the grounds for systematic clampdown on opposition leaders," Abdullahi stated in a signed statement.

The ADC spokesperson emphasized that the party has no interest in undermining democratic processes but is instead committed to offering Nigerians an alternative to what he described as the "irredeemable incompetence" of the current government.

"We are not soldiers, we are politicians. We don't have bullets; we only have the ballots. When the time comes, we will only present our solutions and an alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people and leave them to make their choice," he clarified.

The exchange highlights growing tensions between the Presidency and opposition parties as political positioning intensifies ahead of future elections. The ADC is part of a broader coalition of opposition parties that has been increasingly vocal in its criticism of the Tinubu administration's policies and governance approach.

Political analysts note that such rhetoric from both sides could potentially heighten the political temperature in Nigeria, a country with a history of sensitive transitions of power.
