A prominent member of the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has declared that "nobody is entirely happy with the way the country is going" while explaining his recent resignation as senior adviser to President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Wednesday during Channels Television's Politics Today programme, Baba-Ahmed cited widespread hunger, insecurity, and bloodshed as major concerns that influenced his decision to step down from his government position.
"Some members of the Northern Elders Forum knew about my feelings about the job, about the administration, about the direction this country was going. They knew I was unhappy about many things. So it wasn't entirely a surprise when I walked around and said I am back," Baba-Ahmed explained.
He emphasized the gravity of Nigeria's current challenges, stating, "Nobody would tell you that they are entirely happy with the way the country is going. There is too much hunger, insecurity, and bloodshed."
Baba-Ahmed's resignation comes amid growing concerns about the direction of the Tinubu administration, particularly from northern stakeholders. His return to the Northern Elders Forum signals potential increased criticism of government policies from the influential northern group.
The former presidential adviser has previously made headlines for his outspoken views on Nigerian politics, including controversial statements regarding the 2027 presidential race and advice for various political figures including President Tinubu himself.
His departure from government service raises questions about the administration's relationship with northern political interests and its handling of national challenges like food security and safety concerns.
