The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has officially denied allegations that drug trafficking through Nigerian courier services has increased under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.
In a statement released on Sunday, NIPOST described recent media reports attributing such claims to the organization as "false and misleading," urging the public to disregard them entirely.
The controversy emerged following a publication by an online media outlet that suggested NIPOST had confirmed an increase in drug trafficking through Nigeria's courier services since President Tinubu took office.
"At no point has NIPOST made such a statement or associated these activities with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu," the postal service clarified in its statement.
The agency expressed "deep disappointment" at the misleading headline, which it said falsely created the impression that NIPOST had either confirmed or endorsed such allegations.
"While we respect the role of the media in promoting accountability, the dissemination of sensational and inaccurate information, particularly in matters of national security, risks eroding public trust and undermining the collaborative work being done to sanitise the courier and logistics sector," NIPOST stated.
The postal service reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria's security and ongoing efforts to maintain integrity within the courier and logistics sector.
