The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to deploy additional military personnel to Yobe State following escalating ISWAP terrorist attacks in the region. The call came after Hon. Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim, representing Damaturu, Gujba, Gulani, and Tarmuwa Federal Constituency, moved a motion highlighting the deteriorating security situation.

According to Yobe State Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications, Yusuf Ali, Hon. Ibrahim's motion detailed a harrowing attack on Ngurbuwa village on April 18, 2025. The assault claimed the lives of two soldiers and several vigilante members, displaced numerous residents, and destroyed a critical bridge connecting the area to other parts of the state.

The lawmaker also referenced another attack in Buni Yadi on May 3, 2025, which occurred just hours after a regional security summit had convened in the area, underscoring the brazen nature of the terrorist operations.

Government Response and Action Plan

In response to the motion, the House called on multiple government agencies to take immediate action. The Ministry of Defence and security agencies were urged to intensify operations in the affected areas. Additionally, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North East Development Commission (NEDC), and Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs were directed to deliver humanitarian support to communities impacted by the attacks.

The escalating terrorist activities in Yobe State come amid reports that the Nigerian military had neutralized 6,260 terrorists and rescued 5,365 civilians over the past two years, according to the Defence Headquarters.

These recent attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's northeast region, where ISWAP and other terrorist groups continue to pose significant threats to civilian populations and military personnel alike.
