Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command, have arrested four suspects allegedly involved in the vandalism and transportation of stolen telecommunication cables, wires, and electrical transformer components from Kano to Lagos.
The suspects, identified as Mogaji Ibrahim, Umaru Adamu, Abba Muhazu, and Adamu Idris, were intercepted at the old Ore Toll Gate along the Lagos expressway in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Intelligence-Led Operation
According to Daniel Aidamenbor, spokesperson for the NSCDC in Ondo State, the arrest followed actionable intelligence received by the command. The suspects were caught while transporting vandalised telecommunication wires, BEDC equipment including transformer parts, high tension cables, copper and armoured cables, and other cut-to-size metal objects.
"They were apprehended while transporting vandalised telecommunication wires, BEDC equipment such as transformer parts, high tension cables, copper and armoured cables, and other cut-to-size metal objects from Kano to Lagos," Aidamenbor stated.
The NSCDC spokesperson confirmed that all items being conveyed by the suspects have been recovered and preserved as evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Investigation Continues
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations have commenced to identify their sponsors and other possible collaborators behind the criminal operation. The NSCDC has reaffirmed its commitment to combating economic sabotage, particularly activities targeting critical national assets and infrastructure across the country.
This arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of infrastructure vandalism in Nigeria, which continues to affect power distribution, telecommunications, and other essential services across the country.
The theft of electrical components and telecommunication equipment has become increasingly common, with criminal networks operating across state lines to evade detection and sell stolen materials in different markets.
