The House of Representatives has inaugurated an Ad hoc Committee tasked with convening a special security conference to address the persistent security challenges plaguing Plateau State and surrounding regions.
During the inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday in Abuja, the committee's Chairman, Rep. Hammed Waheed (APC-Lagos), expressed deep concern over the recurring violence that has devastated communities across the state.
"The security challenges in Plateau have persisted for too long," Waheed stated, highlighting how the cycle of violence has left many communities in mourning, displaced countless families, destroyed livelihoods, and eroded trust among ethnic and religious groups.
Beyond Plateau: A National Security Concern
The chairman emphasized that these tragic events are not isolated to Plateau State alone but have far-reaching implications. "These tragic developments reverberate beyond Plateau, affecting neighbouring states and undermining national stability," he noted.
The formation of the committee follows a House of Representatives resolution passed during its plenary session on May 8, responding to growing public concern over the deteriorating security situation.
Stakeholder Engagement for Sustainable Solutions
The special security conference will bring together key stakeholders including security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organizations, youth and women groups, researchers, and political actors. These diverse participants will engage in comprehensive discussions aimed at generating sustainable solutions to the crisis.
"This is not just another conference," Waheed emphasized. "It is an opportunity for truth-telling, healing, dialogue, and decisive recommendations."
The initiative comes amid recent violent incidents in Plateau State, including the reported killing of travelers from Kaduna State, which has prompted condemnation from various quarters and calls for justice from northern governors and religious groups.
