Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a stark warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that rampant insecurity and corruption are not only destroying lives but severely damaging Nigeria's global reputation.
In a statement shared on his official X handle, the former Anambra State Governor expressed deep concern over what he described as the "normalization" of mass killings across the country.
"The regularity of bloodletting of innocent souls in our country has reduced the news value of human deaths," Obi stated, highlighting how violence has become so commonplace that many incidents now go unreported.
Rising Violence in a Nation Not at War
Obi pointed to numerous recent killing incidents across several states, noting with alarm that "for a country not officially at war, this is terrifying." He emphasized that many violent attacks are never reported in the media as the crisis spreads to "every corner of our nation."
The 2023 presidential candidate warned that the federal government's perceived silence or inadequate response to these security challenges is creating an impression of indifference among grieving Nigerians who have lost loved ones to violence.
Corruption and Insecurity: Nigeria's Image Problem
In his address to the President, Obi described the failure to tackle both insecurity and systemic corruption as "real demarketing" of Nigeria on the international stage. He urged Tinubu to view criticisms as constructive input rather than opposition rhetoric.
The businessman and philanthropist called on the administration to urgently review and strengthen its security strategy to combat the growing menace before it further deteriorates.
Obi's comments come amid increasing concerns about Nigeria's security situation, with armed groups, bandits, and other criminal elements operating across multiple regions of the country.
As of press time, the Presidency had not issued an official response to Peter Obi's statements.
