The Igbo Socio-cultural Organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended the recent adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by Nigeria's opposition coalition leaders, describing it as a crucial move that has prevented the country from drifting toward a one-party system.
In a joint press statement issued on Friday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze characterized the development as "a remarkable milestone" that effectively halts Nigeria's "dangerous drift towards an unhealthy one-party nation."
According to the group, the coalition's move has rendered "crisis merchants" irrelevant—individuals they claim were previously engaged to undermine opposition parties such as the PDP, LP, SDP, and APGA. These political actors are reportedly growing "increasingly anxious about their future" as ADC emerges as a formidable contender.
Call for Economic Recovery
Ohanaeze used the opportunity to call on the federal government to "wake up from its complacent slumber" and take decisive actions aimed at accelerating Nigeria's economic recovery. The group specifically addressed President Tinubu, urging him to pursue "redemptive actions that foster economic revitalization" and to critically assess whether his administration's policies have benefited the Nigerian populace.
"The glaring inefficacy of certain ministers in overseeing critical sectors—including the economy, security, agriculture, health, and rural development must be confronted with urgency as we approach August 2025, a milestone marking two years since the appointments of his Cabinet Ministers," the statement read.
While acknowledging progress in road infrastructure and policies within the Federal Capital Territory under Ministers David Umahi and Nyesom Wike, Ohanaeze emphasized the need for President Tinubu to reevaluate his Cabinet and prioritize "evidence-based reforms and policies crafted by esteemed Nigerian economists, experts, and technocrats."
Political Realignment Ahead of 2027
The group warned of potential political realignments that could affect the 2027 elections, suggesting that several state governors might switch allegiance to the ADC. "Disturbing intelligence suggests that several state governors may betray his aspirations for re-election in 2027 by switching allegiance to the ADC, especially in light of the impending challenges that may beset the ruling party, APC," the statement noted.
Particularly concerning Northern governors, Ohanaeze claimed they are "clandestinely engaging with ADC representatives" and facing pressure from Northern political leaders and traditional rulers. The group also warned that the Northern region might sabotage Tinubu's political interests if he attempts to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima with another Northern nominee in the forthcoming elections.
Despite supporting the emergence of a stronger opposition, Ohanaeze expressed reservations about the coalition leaders themselves, stating that "many coalition leaders share culpability for the ten years of unbearable suffering inflicted upon Nigerians under APC governance since 2015" and that "a staggering 80% of ADC coalition leaders are individuals of questionable character."
The group concluded by urging President Tinubu to confront his shortcomings with "sincerity and urgency," suggesting that the current trajectory indicates a need for immediate adjustment of his governance strategies.
