The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi to formally resign his membership after he joined a political coalition.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized that the Labour Party under Abure's leadership remains firmly opposed to joining the coalition, describing its members as "power mongers whose only interest was self and not the people."

The party warned Nigerians that the coalition's promise of a 'New Nigeria is Possible' is merely a deception that cannot be achieved with what they described as "an assemblage of old, recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians."

"We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We're also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him," Ifoh stated.

No Room for Dual Loyalty

The statement made it clear that the Labour Party would not tolerate members with divided allegiances. "Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona. The party will not avail itself to individuals who have one leg in one party and another leg elsewhere," Ifoh declared.

He further criticized the coalition, stating that it consists of "opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into the circle of power, people who are desperate to continue holding on to power."

According to the statement, nearly 70 percent of Nigeria's population are youths who are tired of the old political order and "gerontocrats deciding their fate." The party maintained that the new Nigeria that youths dream of cannot be realized through the coalition.

"The new Nigeria of our dream can only be realized through Labour Party, and the party is willing to lead Nigerians along that trajectory," Ifoh asserted.

He urged all party members to remain loyal and keep the party structure intact ahead of future elections.

It should be noted that reports indicate Peter Obi has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a coalition move ahead of the 2027 elections, though Abia State Governor Alex Otti has publicly stated he remains a Labour Party member and is not part of any coalition.
