Malam Ibrahim Khalil, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the 2023 Kano State elections, has outlined three strategic conditions that could lead to the party's victory in the 2027 general elections.
In an exclusive interview on Wednesday, Khalil expressed confidence that the ADC could emerge victorious against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both national and state levels if certain critical support structures are consolidated.
Three Critical Conditions for ADC's Victory
"For ADC to succeed in 2027, three things must happen," Khalil stated. "First, the new entrants into the party must give full support to the existing leadership and structures. Second, if the complaints Nigerians are making are genuine, they should throw their weight behind this movement. And third, if the ruling APC fails to reform its internal system and continues on this path that has triggered public outcry, then without a doubt, we will defeat them."
Addressing the political landscape in Kano State, currently under New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) governance, Khalil highlighted how internal divisions among existing parties present an opportunity for the ADC.
"The disunity created among Kano citizens by parties like PDP, APC, and now NNPP is our opportunity," he explained. "If the people of Kano are truly ready, they must abandon any agenda that continues to divide them. ADC is not here to cause conflict or promote enmity—we are offering an alternative, people-oriented platform."
Political Realignment and Leadership Changes
Khalil's comments come amid significant political realignment within the opposition landscape. On Wednesday, opposition leaders held a special meeting in Abuja where they formally adopted the ADC as their united political front for the 2027 polls.
During this meeting, party executives resigned their positions, with the national chairmanship and secretary roles handed to former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, respectively.
However, reports indicate potential internal divisions within the ADC. According to a statement by Isa Musa Matara, spokesperson for a dissenting faction, some key stakeholders were allegedly not consulted before the decision to adopt the party as a common platform for opposition forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kano's Ongoing Emirate Crisis
The political landscape in Kano remains complicated by the ongoing Emirate crisis. The ruling NNPP continues to support reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, while the opposition APC, under former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje's influence, backs deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.
This persistent tension represents the kind of divisive politics that Khalil suggests the ADC aims to overcome with its alternative approach.
