The Caretaker Chairman of the African Democratic Party (ADC) in Ondo State, Wole Ademoyegun, has expressed optimism that the recent adoption of the party by coalition forces will significantly strengthen ADC as a formidable political force in the state.
Speaking on Thursday, Ademoyegun welcomed the development, stating that it would help establish a credible opposition in Ondo State, which he described as essential for the growth of both the state and Nigeria as a whole.
Prominent Political Figures Join Coalition
On Wednesday, several high-profile political leaders officially adopted ADC as their platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu's reelection bid in 2027. The coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark.
The coalition has also attracted notable political figures from Ondo State, including former State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Tola Alabere, former Senator Nicholas Tofowomo, and Gbenga Edema, who was the NNPP's 2024 governorship candidate.
Commitment to Good Governance
According to Ademoyegun, the ADC is committed to reclaiming its position as a strong and influential force within Ondo State's political landscape. "Our capability to provide credible opposition remains steadfast and we will collaborate to build a party that embodies the principles of good governance. This is in stark contrast to the current challenges facing our nation, where good governance is often lacking," he stated.
Myson Nejo, the ADC's gubernatorial candidate in the last election, added that the party will prioritize democratic ethics and ensure that every member is treated with dignity and respect. He highlighted that ADC came third in the November 16, 2024, gubernatorial election and will provide a platform where everyone can participate and contribute to its growth.
The coalition's formation has already sparked reactions from the presidency, with government officials reportedly describing the coalition members as "internally displaced politicians."
El-Rufai has also mentioned that the coalition plans to register a new party as a backup to ADC, indicating strategic planning for the 2027 elections.
