Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has announced plans to establish a Nigerian Army operational base in the Zuru Emirate following a series of deadly bandit attacks in communities across Kebbi South.
The governor made this announcement during condolence visits to Tadurga village in Zuru Local Government Area and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu LGA, where recent attacks resulted in multiple casualties and livestock theft.
Enhanced Security Measures
According to Governor Idris, the state government has secured the deployment of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other military equipment from Abuja to strengthen security operations in the affected areas.
"We have directed the immediate provision of temporary accommodation for troops pending the construction of a permanent base," the governor stated, emphasizing his administration's commitment to addressing the security challenges in the region.
In a stern warning to collaborators, Governor Idris announced plans to amend existing laws to prescribe death or life imprisonment for informants aiding bandits in their operations against local communities.
Traditional Rulers' Appeal
During the governor's visit, traditional rulers including the Chief of Danko and the Emir of Zuru urged the government to increase military presence in the area, particularly along border routes frequently used by attackers from neighboring states.
The establishment of a permanent military base is expected to provide a more coordinated response to the security threats facing communities in the Zuru Emirate and surrounding areas.
This development comes as part of broader efforts by the Kebbi State government to address the rising insecurity in the southern part of the state, which has experienced increased bandit activities in recent months.
