A deadly ambush by suspected bandits has claimed the lives of 20 soldiers in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when military personnel responding to reports of bandit movement in the area were attacked.
According to local sources, the attacks took place in two separate communities - Konan Dutse Kaiyan Ghana near Bangi at around 11 pm and Gulmin Boka at approximately 5 pm. The bandits were reportedly following their usual route to carry out abductions and cattle rustling when they encountered the soldiers.
Details of the Ambush
The Chairman of Mariga Local Government, Alhaji Abbas Kasuwa Garba, confirmed the attacks, stating that the soldiers were ambushed while responding to intelligence about bandit movements in the area. He further revealed that 17 bodies of soldiers had been retrieved from the forest and deposited at Kontagora barracks.
"The vigilantes and other security operatives are still searching and trailing the criminals," Garba said. He also commended the Nigerian Air Force for their swift response in countering the bandits during the attack.
Despite the heavy casualties suffered by the military, reports indicate that many bandits were also neutralized during the intense gun battle that ensued.
Government Response
The local government chairman has urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements to the relevant authorities. "The government is doing everything possible to ensure peace and stability in the area," he assured.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued by the state government or other security agencies regarding the incident.
This attack adds to the growing security challenges in Niger State, which has been grappling with banditry and other forms of insecurity in recent years.
