Armed men suspected to be rustlers have killed a herder and made away with an unspecified number of cattle in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State during the weekend.
The deadly attack occurred at night around Jewu bush near Jakana town, according to security sources. The victim, identified as Mohammed Audu, 31, was attacked while tending to his livestock.
Audu sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and was rushed to the General Hospital in Jakana, where medical personnel confirmed him dead upon arrival.
The victim's brother, Sanda Audu, reported the incident to police authorities on Sunday, describing it as a "cold-blooded murder." Following the report, a joint security team comprising troops from Operation Hadin Kai, Police, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters was deployed to the area.
The assailants reportedly fled with a large number of cattle to an unknown destination before security personnel arrived at the scene.
Authorities have released the victim's remains to his family for burial according to Islamic rites, while investigations into the incident continue.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in parts of Borno State, where cattle rustling and armed attacks continue to threaten the livelihoods and safety of local communities.
