The Emir of Gwoza, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, has firmly denied reports claiming Boko Haram terrorists invaded Gwoza town in Borno State, describing such information as "baseless and misleading."

The royal father's clarification comes after widespread panic gripped the town on Friday following sounds of distant gunshots shortly after Jummat prayers. The incident sparked fears among residents, many of whom fled their homes believing an attack was underway.

"Wallahi, I felt disappointed when I saw people running and chanting that Boko Haram has invaded Gwoza. There was no such attack," the Emir stated while addressing journalists.

Joint Investigation Confirms No Attack

According to the Emir, a joint preliminary investigation conducted with the Nigerian Army's Brigade Commander in the area confirmed that there was no incursion or confrontation between Boko Haram fighters and troops in Gwoza town.

He acknowledged that the sounds of gunfire may have originated from the outskirts of the town, but emphasized that they did not indicate an active threat to the community. Gwoza's strategic location bordering the notorious Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains—both known hideouts for insurgents—has made the area particularly sensitive to security concerns.

The Emir noted that unconfirmed reports suggested four individuals dressed in black—suspected to be Boko Haram members—were allegedly seen sneaking into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. However, he stressed that these claims were yet to be verified.

"Troops are conducting thorough search operations to ensure there is no infiltration. The curfew is to help security forces do their work and prevent unnecessary fear," he explained.

Security Measures in Place

Security forces have reportedly intensified patrols in and around Gwoza following the incident. The town has previously experienced several attacks from insurgents due to its proximity to known terrorist hideouts.

Military authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security outpost rather than spreading unverified information that could cause panic.

The situation in Gwoza remains calm as security agencies continue to monitor developments in the area.
