At least three people have been killed and many others injured following a violent cattle rustling incident in Kaduna State. The attack, which occurred in Gwaraje village of Igabi Local Government Area, saw armed men make away with approximately 200 cows before violence spread to neighboring communities.
According to reports, the armed rustlers passed through Kadanya and Anguwan Mairijya villages, where they opened fire, killing 35-year-old Rahila Danzaria, a resident of Kadanya.
The situation escalated when two men from Gwaraje—identified as Musa Husaini and Muntari Tajo—who were pursuing the rustlers, were intercepted by angry youths in Anguwan Mairijya. The men were beaten unconscious by the mob, possibly after being mistaken for accomplices.
Investigation Underway as Traditional Leaders Questioned
Security sources have confirmed that police have taken the traditional leaders of the affected communities into custody for questioning. Sarkin Kadanya Obi Mairuwa and Sarkin Anguwan Samaila Gado are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
Preliminary findings have identified one Samaila Danzaria of Anguwan Mairijya as a key suspect in the incident, though he remains at large. Authorities have launched efforts to track down all individuals involved, recover the stolen cattle, and account for any additional victims.
Local residents in the affected communities have reportedly been reluctant to speak about the incident, complicating efforts by authorities to gather clear information about what transpired.
The violence has heightened tensions in the area, with security forces now working to prevent further escalation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
