A significant political realignment is taking shape in Benue State as stakeholders from the Benue South Senatorial District have formed a new coalition aimed at challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The coalition, which convened over the weekend at Haggi Suite in Otukpo, brings together prominent political figures from all nine local government areas of Benue South, including Apa, Agatu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Otukpo, Okpokwu, Oju, and Obi.

PDP Described as "Decayed and Hijacked"

Former Benue State PDP Chairman, Chief John Ngbede, delivered a scathing assessment of his former party, describing it as "decayed and hijacked by selfish interests" that no longer represents the collective aspirations of the people.

"The PDP has been taken over by individuals who build barriers instead of bridges. They have imported poverty and division into our communities. It's time to unite under a new coalition that will restore hope," Ngbede declared during the meeting.

The gathering attracted several influential political figures, including Hon. David Olofu, Prof. David Salifu, Chief Chris Adaba Abah, Alhaji Audu Sule, Chief Abba Adaudu, Rt. Hon. Abu Umoru, Rt. Hon. Abu Edor, Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu, and Mrs. Abeje Egwa.

Criticism of Current Administration

Hon. David Olofu, former Benue State Commissioner for Finance, criticized the current administration for failing to address the chronic lack of infrastructure in rural areas, which he argued has worsened insecurity and deepened poverty in the state.

"Any government that fails to invest in rural infrastructure fails its people. Insecurity thrives where there is abandonment. That's why our people are desperate for an alternative platform, one that prioritizes dignity, safety, and sustainable development," Olofu stated.

The emergence of this coalition represents a potential shift in Benue's political landscape, which has been dominated by the APC and PDP for years. Political analysts suggest this third-force movement could significantly impact the 2027 electoral calculations if it maintains momentum and cohesion.
