The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that joint military operations across Nigeria have resulted in the elimination of 6,260 terrorists and the apprehension of 14,138 terrorists and other criminals over the past two years.
Deputy Director of Defence Media Operations, Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim Abu-Mawashi, revealed these figures during an Expanded Parley with Media Executives on Thursday in Abuja, marking the two-year anniversary of Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other service chiefs in office.
According to Abu-Mawashi, troops also successfully rescued 5,365 kidnapped victims and recovered substantial caches of arms and ammunition during various operations nationwide.
Regional Operational Successes
In the Niger Delta region, troops of Operation Delta Safe recovered N83 billion worth of stolen crude oil, eliminated 103 criminals, apprehended 2,760 others, and rescued 266 civilians from kidnappers.
The North East operations under Operation Hadin Kai resulted in the neutralization of 1,246 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, with 2,467 arrests. Troops also rescued 1,920 civilians and recovered 982 arms and 2,153 ammunition in this region.
In the North West, Operation Fasan Yamma eliminated 1,374 bandits, including top commanders across Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto States. The operation led to 2,160 bandit arrests and the rescue of 3,288 hostages, alongside the recovery of 947 weapons and 25,802 rounds of ammunition.
North-Central operations resulted in the elimination of 730 terrorists, bandits, and violent extremists, with 7,153 arrests and 1,510 civilian rescues. Troops recovered 1,065 weapons and 19,709 rounds of ammunition in this zone.
In the South East, Operation UDO KA neutralized 440 terrorists and arrested 1,677 criminals while rescuing 294 civilians. The operation also yielded 683 weapons and 21,300 rounds of ammunition.
The Joint Task Force South West eliminated 80 criminals, arrested 1,763 others, rescued 89 kidnap victims, and recovered 143 weapons and 177,904 rounds of ammunition.
Director Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, described the event as a significant milestone in addressing Nigeria's complex security challenges, emphasizing the military's commitment to keeping Nigerians informed about their activities, achievements, and sacrifices.
Gusau noted that the program aligns with the CDS's leadership philosophy of "leading a people-centric armed forces."
