At least two people have been killed in separate bandit attacks that occurred in Kaduna and Katsina States within a 24-hour period, according to security reports released on Friday.
The first attack took place on Thursday night in Durum village, Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where bandits killed a vigilante member who was attempting to defend the community from the attackers.
In a second incident on Friday afternoon, armed bandits struck the outskirts of Sheme in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, shooting dead a local farmer and making away with his cattle in a rustling operation.
Security analyst Bakatsine shared details of both incidents on social media platform X, stating: "Yesterday night, bandits killed a vigilante during an attack on Durum village, Makarfi LGA, Kaduna State. This afternoon, they killed a farmer and rustled his cattle in Sheme outskirts area, Faskari LGA, Katsina State."
Rising Insecurity in Northern Nigeria
These attacks add to the growing list of security challenges facing Nigeria's northwestern states, where banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping have become increasingly common. Local vigilante groups often find themselves on the frontlines of community defense efforts, sometimes with fatal consequences.
The incidents come amid ongoing concerns about rural security in the region, particularly for farming communities whose livelihoods are threatened by armed groups. Local authorities have yet to issue official statements regarding these latest attacks or measures being taken to apprehend the perpetrators.
In recent weeks, Kaduna State government inaugurated a Special Joint Task Force aimed at curbing urban crime, while similar security challenges continue to affect neighboring states including Zamfara, where multiple farmer abductions have been reported.
