The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a direct appeal to terrorists and bandits operating across northern Nigeria to end their violent campaigns and surrender their weapons.
During a recent interview with the BBC, Ribadu emphasized that the time has come for armed groups to cease their operations. "We believe the time has come for these terrorists to stop and lay down their arms," Ribadu stated firmly.
The National Security Adviser highlighted what he described as substantial progress in the fight against insecurity under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, particularly noting the reduction in large-scale terrorist operations nationwide.
"In the past, terrorists used to attack prisons, trains, and military camps, but since this government came into power, we have stopped that. There has not been a single major terrorist attack since this administration took over, except for those in Borno," he explained.
According to Ribadu, military operations have successfully neutralized approximately 300 top-level bandit leaders through various tactical engagements. This has reportedly led to improved security conditions in previously troubled regions.
"Now many people have returned to their farms, and areas that were previously inaccessible due to insecurity are now open again," Ribadu added, pointing to tangible improvements in civilian life.
However, Ribadu's optimistic assessment comes against a backdrop of ongoing security challenges in several northern states. Parts of Plateau, Benue, and Katsina continue to experience recurring attacks by armed groups, raising questions about the extent of security improvements.
A recently surfaced video showing northern Nigerians—including women and children—pleading for government intervention against bandits further highlights the persistent security concerns in affected communities.
While the administration claims significant progress, the continued reports of attacks in various northern states suggest that the security situation remains complex and challenging despite the government's efforts.
