The Benue State Police Command has confirmed a deadly attack on Yelewata town in Guma Local Government Area, where suspected bandits invaded the community early Saturday morning.

According to a statement released by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Edet Udeme, tactical teams were swiftly deployed to the area and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

"Some of the attackers were neutralized in the process," the PPRO stated. "But it is with great sadness that we report that some individuals also lost their lives and others sustained injuries during the incident."

While authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of civilian casualties, security personnel and medical workers are currently on ground attending to the injured.

Ongoing Security Response

The police have assured residents that they remain fully committed to protecting lives and property in the area. Efforts are currently ongoing to apprehend the fleeing assailants.

"Our men are still in pursuit of the attackers. We will continue to do all it takes to keep everyone safe," the statement added.

This attack comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Benue State, particularly in border communities that have experienced similar violent incidents in recent months.

Local sources indicate that Yelewata, located in Guma LGA, has previously been targeted by armed groups, raising concerns about the persistent security threats facing rural communities in the region.

The Benue State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident, but security measures are expected to be enhanced in the affected area and surrounding communities.
