The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Audi, has ordered a comprehensive security reinforcement across the country following intelligence reports of planned protests during Democracy Day celebrations.
According to a statement by CSC Afolabi Babawale, National Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, the directive comes in response to credible intelligence indicating plans for peaceful protests in several states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Delta, and Rivers, among others.
Heightened Security Measures
During a briefing with top management and commandants, Dr. Audi emphasized the core mandate of the NSCDC, which includes protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, as well as safeguarding lives and property.
"To this end, you are directed to place your officers and men on red alert across all flash points, venues of the planned protests, public gatherings, recreational centres and muster points of any rally," Dr. Audi instructed.
He further stressed the importance of protecting government facilities to prevent any breakdown of law and order or vandalism that might be orchestrated by individuals who typically hijack peaceful protests for criminal activities.
Inter-Agency Collaboration
To ensure effective security coverage, the NSCDC will collaborate with sister security agencies to maintain law and order and guarantee the safety of lives and property throughout the Democracy Day period.
The Commandant General also appealed to Nigerian youth to resist being manipulated by desperate and criminal-minded individuals, warning that anyone caught engaging in unlawful activities would face arrest and the full weight of the law.
This security alert comes as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, a significant date in the nation's political history that marks the country's return to democratic governance.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that various stakeholders, including the police and civil society organizations in Lagos, have agreed on measures to ensure peaceful protests during the Democracy Day celebrations.
