Amid rising insecurity and renewed killings across Benue State, Hon. Inalegwu Ejembi Adaje, a 2027 House of Representatives aspirant for Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has called on youths to remain calm and law-abiding as authorities intensify efforts to restore peace to affected communities.
Addressing the wave of protests that erupted in Makurdi and surrounding towns on Sunday, Adaje acknowledged the frustration and grief felt by many residents but commended protesters for conducting themselves peacefully.
"I want to commend our young people for expressing their grievances peacefully. This is a difficult time for all of us, but I urge you to remain calm. Government is not sleeping. Measures are being put in place to deal with the situation comprehensively," he said.
Comprehensive Security Approach
Adaje revealed that authorities are implementing a dual strategy to address the violence plaguing several local government areas. This approach combines kinetic measures, involving military and security force actions, with non-kinetic strategies focused on dialogue, reconciliation, and community engagement to address the root causes of the violence.
The political aspirant strongly condemned the recent killings in Guma, Apa, and Agatu local government areas, offering prayers for victims and expressing deep condolences to bereaved families.
"As a people of faith, we must keep praying. The church continues to intercede, and with unity and perseverance, Benue will overcome these dark times," Adaje stated.
The recent violence has prompted significant concern across the state, with reports indicating that the Inspector General of Police has arrived in Benue following incidents where suspected herdsmen allegedly burned over 200 citizens alive.
Governor Alia has also spoken on the matter, lamenting that while authorities are responding, the military remains overstretched in its capacity to address multiple security challenges simultaneously.
The Nigerian Army has vowed to pursue those responsible for the attacks, emphasizing their commitment to restoring peace in the troubled region.
