The Kano State Police Command has issued a directive prohibiting Emirs Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero from conducting Durbar activities during the upcoming Eid-Kabir Sallah celebrations. This decision, announced on Tuesday, aims to maintain peace and prevent potential violence in the state.
According to a statement released by Command PPRO Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, comprehensive security measures have been implemented to ensure peaceful festivities throughout Kano State. The ban extends a previous prohibition that was in place during Eid-El-Fitr celebrations.
Security Concerns Behind the Decision
The police cited intelligence reports indicating that certain groups planned to exploit the Durbar festivities to instigate violence and disrupt public order. "This decision was reached after consultations with security stakeholders, based on intelligence reports indicating that certain groups planned to use Durbar festivities to instigate violence and unrest," the statement explained.
The ongoing tension between supporters of the two rival Emirs has been a concern for security agencies, prompting authorities to take preventive measures during major religious celebrations.
Guidelines for Eid-Kabir Celebrations
The Command outlined several security guidelines that must be strictly followed during the celebrations:
No horse or animal riding of any kind (Kilisa)
No car racing, reckless or dangerous driving
No unlawful possession or display of firearms or weapons
No carrying of items that could cause fear or suspicion
Parents and guardians were advised to caution their children and wards against involvement in any subversive acts, as law enforcement agencies will fully enforce these measures.
Call for Peaceful Celebrations
The police urged worshippers to be law-abiding and conduct themselves peacefully during the festivities. Residents were also advised to avoid any actions likely to breach the peace or disrupt public safety.
While extending Sallah greetings to the people of Kano, the Command also expressed condolences to the families of athletes from Kano who tragically lost their lives while returning from the National Sports Festival.
Security agencies have assured the public that they stand ready to protect lives and property throughout the Eid-Kabir celebrations.
