The Gombe State Police Command has introduced stringent security measures aimed at curbing violence at public events by banning dangerous weapons and imposing restrictions on motorcycle movements across the state.

According to a statement released by the police on Tuesday, individuals found carrying or displaying weapons such as cutlasses, knives, daggers, or clubs during festivals, ceremonies, or large gatherings will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

Tackling 'Kalare' Gang Violence

The ban comes as a direct response to the increasing threat of street thuggery, locally known as 'Kalare,' which has been associated with disruption and violence during public events in the state.

Commissioner of Police, Bello Yahaya, emphasized that the new regulations would be enforced without exception, stressing that no one is above the law.

"These weapons are often used to intimidate, injure, or even kill. We've seen how quickly things can spiral during celebrations when weapons are involved," CP Yahaya stated. "This isn't about stopping people from celebrating — it's about making sure everyone gets home safely."

Motorcycle Restrictions

In addition to the weapons ban, the police have implemented strict controls on motorcycle operations. Effective immediately:

  • Motorcycles are prohibited from operating between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am
  • Riders are restricted to carrying only one passenger
  • Loud truck-like horns on motorcycles are now banned

The command explained that motorcycles have become getaway vehicles for criminals, and these restrictions aim to enhance overall security in the state.

Community Cooperation

The police have called on community leaders, traditional rulers, parents, and motorcycle union officials to help disseminate information about the new regulations and ensure compliance.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities or violations to the nearest police station or through the emergency numbers: 08150567771, 09036435359, and 07038793973.

While reassuring the public of their commitment to protecting citizens' right to peaceful living, the police warned that anyone threatening public peace would face the full weight of the law.
