The Abia State Police Command has issued a statement addressing claims made by a woman, Mrs. Chioma Chikadibia, who alleged that her husband and three daughters were being unlawfully detained by the police.
In a clarification released by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command's spokesperson, the police explained that Mr. Sunday Chikadibia and his three daughters were arrested as suspects and accessories in an ongoing investigation related to alleged kidnapping and murder.
According to the statement, "upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspects were duly arraigned in Court and are presently remanded at the Correctional Centre by the order of a competent court of jurisdiction."
The Command described Mrs. Chikadibia's public alarm about her family members' whereabouts as "untrue and misleading," emphasizing that proper legal procedures had been followed in the case.
CP Danladi Isa, the Commissioner of Police for Abia State, used the opportunity to caution the public against protecting criminal suspects. The statement noted that "shielding criminal suspects makes them accomplices to crime, an act which constitutes a criminal offence under Nigerian law."
The police statement did not provide specific details about the kidnapping and murder case in question, nor did it mention when the suspects were arrested or when they were remanded to the Correctional Centre.
This case highlights the sometimes complex relationship between law enforcement agencies and families of those accused of crimes, particularly when family members believe their relatives are being held unjustly.
