Nine people have died and eleven others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Kyaramma village in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
According to a statement issued by the Jigawa Command of police, the accident occurred around 2:00 a.m. and involved two saloon Golf 3 automobiles that collided head-on.
Details of the Accident
The police statement, signed by the command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, revealed that the first vehicle with registration number Kaduna MKA 687 AY was driven by 35-year-old Adamu Sunusi from Hadejia LGA. The vehicle was traveling from Abuja toward Gujungu town.
The second vehicle, registered as KWL 606 KA, was driven by 30-year-old Bashari Danjummai from the Sauna area of Nasarawa LGA in Kano State. This vehicle was heading toward Kano from Hadejia.
"On reaching Kyaramma village, the vehicles had a head-on collision, as a result, they fell off the road. The crash claimed the lives of nine people, while several others were injured to varying degrees," the statement read.
The force of the impact was so severe that both drivers and seven passengers died on the spot.
Emergency Response
Upon receiving the report, personnel from the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) promptly arrived at the scene to provide assistance. The injured victims were rushed to Ringim General Hospital, where doctors confirmed the deaths of nine passengers, including both drivers.
"A post mortem examination was conducted and corpses were released to their relatives for burial. Eleven passengers are on admission and responding to treatment," the police spokesperson stated.
The identification of all victims is still ongoing, and authorities are in the process of notifying next of kin.
Police Commissioner's Response
The Jigawa Command's Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, has extended his condolences to the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to motorists, urging strict adherence to traffic regulations. He specifically cautioned against overspeeding and emphasized the importance of ensuring vehicles are roadworthy to prevent such avoidable accidents.
The police have indicated that more details will be disclosed as the investigation continues.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on intercity highways where fatal accidents continue to claim lives.
