Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Shaibu Goni for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-month-old baby girl in Potiskum town.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the suspect allegedly took the child from her mother before committing the heinous act, which left the infant with noticeable lacerations.
"The victim and the suspect have been taken to a medical facility for examination," the police statement confirmed.
Police Commissioner Condemns Act
The Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, has strongly condemned the act and assured the public that authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
In his statement, CP Ado urged parents to remain vigilant about their children's safety and issued a stern warning to potential perpetrators that stricter penalties await those who commit such crimes.
This arrest comes amid growing concerns about child safety in Nigeria, where cases of sexual assault against minors continue to be reported despite existing legislation designed to protect children.
Child rights advocates have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of laws against sexual offenses and more comprehensive support systems for victims and their families.
The case has sparked outrage in the local community, with residents demanding swift justice and maximum punishment for the alleged perpetrator if found guilty.
