Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has condemned the gruesome murder of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Police Division in Kano State who was killed by angry protesters on Tuesday.

The tragic incident occurred in Rano Local Government Area following public outrage over the death of a motorcycle mechanic who had been detained by police.

According to police reports, the mechanic, identified as Abdullahi Musa, was arrested for allegedly riding recklessly under the influence of substances. While in custody, Musa reportedly showed signs of weakness and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he died on May 26 while receiving treatment.

Violent Aftermath

Following news of Musa's death, protesters mobilized and launched an attack on the Rano Police Division. During the violent confrontation, parts of the police station and two vehicles were set ablaze.

The DPO sustained serious injuries during the attack and was transported to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Senator Shehu Sani expressed his horror after viewing footage of the incident: "I briefly watched the video of the brutal murder of the DPO of Rano Police Station in Kano State by a mob. They tortured and butchered the police officer to death for performing his duty."

The former lawmaker added, "He was said to have left behind a wife and four children. That despicable crime must not go unpunished. The perpetrators in that footage must all be brought to book. May his soul rest in peace, Amin."

Calls for Justice

Sani's statement echoes growing calls for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the attack. The Rano Local Government Chairman has also reportedly called for a thorough investigation into the murder.

The incident has raised concerns about mob justice and attacks on law enforcement officers in the region. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the DPO's death as investigations continue.

This violent episode comes amid broader concerns about security challenges in various parts of Nigeria, with calls for improved protection for law enforcement personnel who are increasingly becoming targets of mob violence.
