The Chairman of Rano Local Government Area in Kano State, Malam Naziru Ya'u, has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) during a violent protest that erupted in the area on Sunday.
While commending the police for arresting suspects involved in the unrest, Ya'u emphasized the need for a comprehensive probe to ensure innocent persons are not wrongfully detained. The chairman made these remarks during a press briefing in Kano on Wednesday.
"We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. Violence is never a solution to any disagreement. I urge all residents to remain calm and allow the security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation," Ya'u stated.
Background of the Violent Incident
The violence reportedly stemmed from a confrontation between 25-year-old Abdullahi Musa and CSP Muhammad Baba Ali, the DPO of Rano Division. Following Musa's death, angry youths attacked the Rano Divisional Police Station, allegedly setting it ablaze and destroying several vehicles.
The DPO, who sustained injuries during the confrontation, later succumbed to his wounds at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Ya'u warned that his council would not tolerate any form of social misbehavior and appealed for calm in the aftermath of the violence. He assured residents that the local government is working closely with security agencies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Call for Community Engagement
The chairman urged community leaders and religious clerics to intensify efforts in engaging with youth to promote dialogue and reconciliation. He also commended the Kano State Police Command for its swift response and appreciated the Commissioner of Police for visiting the area following the unrest.
Ya'u extended his condolences to the people of Rano Emirate over the death of the youth, to the Nigeria Police Force over the loss of the DPO, and to the people of Nasarawa State.
The chairman reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring peace, security, and development across the local government area, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence between residents and security agencies.
