Several persons are feared dead and many others injured following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen along the Makurdi–Naka road in Benue State on Friday evening.
According to sources who spoke to BenriNews, the attackers struck along the troubled axis, leaving many commuters stranded as the violence unfolded.
Persistent Security Challenges
The Makurdi–Naka road has reportedly remained under the control of armed Fulani militia groups for weeks, despite repeated assurances from authorities about military intervention to secure the area.
This latest attack comes just days after Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, relocated to Benue State in response to escalating violence across the region.
The incident marks another tragic episode in the ongoing security challenges facing Benue communities, particularly those along the Makurdi-Naka corridor which has become notorious for such attacks.
Pattern of Violence
This attack follows a series of similar incidents in the region. Recently, suspected herdsmen reportedly hijacked a Benue Links bus and kidnapped passengers in Owukpa area. In another incident, scores were feared dead after an attack on Naka, also in Benue State.
The persistent nature of these attacks has raised concerns among residents and stakeholders about the effectiveness of security measures in the state.
As of the time of this report, official casualty figures have not been confirmed, and security agencies are yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
BenriNews will provide updates as more information becomes available on this developing situation.
