Residents of Rano Local Government Area in Kano State have strongly condemned the recent mob attack that resulted in the death of Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ali Baba, as tension continues to grip the community.
The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects in connection with the incident that occurred on Monday, as investigations into the tragic event continue.
According to sources who spoke to reporters, the mob attack was allegedly triggered by the death of a civilian who had been taken into police custody following complaints about drunk motorcycle riding.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by Comrade Bello Abubakar Maude Rano, the group 'Concerned Rano Citizens' described the incident as tragic and unrepresentative of the peace-loving people of Rano, who are known for their tolerance, lawfulness, and mutual respect.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late DPO, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kano State Police Command. This loss is painful and unacceptable to us as a community," the statement read.
The group urged security agencies to ensure those responsible for the attack are brought to justice while calling on youth and the general public to remain calm and uphold the values of peace and unity for which Rano is known.
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm has settled over Rano as the police have deployed a new DPO to the area. Security measures have reportedly been heightened to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
The Kano State Police Command has yet to release official details regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the civilian in police custody, which allegedly sparked the mob action.
This incident comes at a time when relations between security forces and communities across Nigeria remain delicate, with calls for improved police-community relations growing louder nationwide.
