A high-profile coalition meeting of opposition figures in Abuja turned chaotic on Saturday when delegates from Jigawa State stormed the venue, disrupting proceedings that included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party's Peter Obi.

The incident occurred at the Abuja Continental Hotel during a gathering of the National Political Consultative Group (North), which had brought together prominent political figures including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti.

According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, announced a delegate to represent Jigawa State. This announcement reportedly sparked immediate outrage among other representatives from the state who felt sidelined in the selection process.

The meeting, widely seen as part of strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, descended into disorder as protesters voiced their grievances over what they described as improper representation.

"The Jigawa delegates felt their interests were being undermined by the leadership of the coalition," a source who witnessed the confrontation told BenriNews. "They demanded proper consultation before representatives are appointed on their behalf."

This disruption highlights growing tensions within opposition circles as political realignments continue ahead of the next electoral cycle. The coalition meeting was reportedly part of ongoing consultations to form a united front against the ruling party in upcoming elections.

Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Peter Obi has issued official statements regarding the incident as of press time. However, political analysts suggest this disruption may indicate deeper factional issues that could affect opposition unity efforts.

The meeting comes amid calls from some political groups for the presidency to be zoned to the South in the next election cycle, adding another layer of complexity to the coalition-building process.
