The Kano State Government has taken a significant step towards improving educational infrastructure in the state by inaugurating a 15-member technical committee tasked with establishing a new polytechnic in Gaya.
The committee was inaugurated by Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the state Deputy Governor who also serves as the Commissioner for Higher Education. During the inauguration ceremony, Gwarzo emphasized the importance of the project to the people of Kano State, particularly residents of the Gaya region.
"You are to strictly adhere to your terms of reference and ensure the timely completion of your assignment," Gwarzo instructed the committee members. "This project is of great importance to the people of Kano State, especially the Gaya region, and it must be handled with all seriousness."
According to a statement issued by Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, the committee will be chaired by Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education. Shehu Sani Dauda, Director of Administration and General Services in the same ministry, will serve as secretary.
Committee's Responsibilities
The technical committee has been assigned multiple responsibilities that include:
- Assessing the existing infrastructure at the proposed site in Gaya
- Preparing a bill of quantities for additional facilities
- Drafting a bill for the polytechnic's legal establishment
- Developing both an academic brief and a physical master plan for the institution
- Recommending human and material resources necessary for the successful take-off of the polytechnic
Additionally, the committee has been granted the authority to co-opt additional members for advisory support and address any related matters that may arise during the course of its work.
The committee has been given a tight deadline of two weeks from the date of inauguration to submit its comprehensive report to the state government.
This initiative is part of the Kano State Government's efforts to expand access to tertiary education and develop technical skills among the youth population in the state, particularly in the Gaya region.
