The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has issued a directive to all district heads and traditional leaders under his authority to immediately suspend preparations for the Eid-Kabir Sallah Durbar celebration.
According to the Emir, the decision was necessitated by security concerns and intelligence reports indicating possible attacks targeted at him during the festivities. "We have credible intelligence reports that some youths around Zage and Kofar Wambai have been actively mobilized by some unpatriotic politicians to attack us," the Emir stated.
Security Concerns Behind the Decision
The Emir's decision follows meetings with the Kano State Government, during which he was presented with evidence of plans to use his movement during the Durbar to create tension in the ancient city. The suspension aims to safeguard the peace and tranquility currently enjoyed in Kano.
"Therefore, we are directing all our District Heads, Wards and Village Heads to strictly adhere to the postponement and stay in their location to avoid any unforeseen circumstances," Sanusi directed.
The Emir also used the opportunity to pray for a peaceful Sallah celebration throughout Kano and commended the government for their proactive efforts to prevent potential security challenges.
Police Ban on Durbar
This development comes after the Kano Police Command had earlier issued a warning and banned the Sallah Durbar, a colorful horse parade that traditionally marks Eid celebrations in northern Nigeria.
The Durbar is a significant cultural event in Kano and other northern Nigerian emirates, featuring horsemen dressed in traditional regalia and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. Its cancellation represents a major adjustment to the Eid-Kabir celebrations this year.
Despite the cancellation of the Durbar, other Eid-Kabir celebrations are expected to continue in Kano, with residents advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
