The Niger State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has expressed serious concerns over the widespread disregard for safety protocols at construction sites across the state, citing numerous accidents and near-misses as evidence of the problem.
During a recent interface with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and contractors handling ongoing projects, the committee, led by Chairman Abubakar Suleiman Gomna, questioned the ministry's effectiveness in enforcing safety regulations at construction sites.
Committee members Mohammed Haruna and Sani Umar emphasized the critical importance of workplace safety in construction projects. They insisted that construction companies must establish dedicated safety departments and called for rigorous enforcement of safety standards.
In a decisive move, the committee passed a motion, moved by Mohammed Haruna and seconded by Isah Etsugaie, authorizing the immediate stoppage of work on any project where contractors fail to comply with mandatory safety protocols.
Responding to these concerns, Permanent Secretary Hassan Baba Etsu assured the committee that the Ministry would prioritize citizens' safety and enforce safety regulations more strictly going forward.
"Contractors will not receive payments without complying with safety protocols, as we are prioritizing citizens' safety above all else," Etsu stated. "We also pledge continued cooperation with your Committee to ensure best practices in infrastructural development, supporting the New Niger Agenda."
The contractors present at the meeting also committed to adhering to safety protocols and ensuring safer working environments at their respective construction sites.
This development comes as part of broader efforts by the Niger State Assembly to enhance oversight of infrastructure projects and ensure they meet required standards while protecting workers and the public.
