A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Craig Street, Shomolu, Lagos, during the decking process on Sunday. The incident occurred at a site where two buildings were being erected simultaneously.

According to preliminary reports, the building's pillars fell onto a nearby church, causing partial damage to the structure. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded in the incident, as worshippers inside the church managed to escape unharmed.

Emergency Response

Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) promptly arrived at the scene and conducted a coordinated search operation to confirm that no individuals were trapped beneath the debris. The construction site has since been cordoned off to prevent further accidents.

As part of their response, LASEMA officials carried out public sensitisation and safety awareness campaigns in the surrounding area to educate residents about construction safety protocols.

The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined as investigations continue. This incident adds to the growing list of building collapses in Lagos, raising concerns about construction standards and regulatory oversight in Nigeria's commercial capital.

Building collapses have become a recurring issue in Lagos, often attributed to substandard materials, poor workmanship, inadequate supervision, and non-compliance with building regulations. The Lagos State Government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of adhering to building codes and obtaining proper permits before commencing construction projects.
