An Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) staff, Mustapha Isa, lost his life on Thursday following an electrocution incident while repairing an electrical fault in the Mabushi area of Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. when Isa, who was working atop an electrical pole in the Mabushi-office area, was electrocuted. He subsequently fell from the pole and sustained a fatal head injury.
According to reports, emergency responders rushed Isa to the General Hospital in Gwarinpa, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi for autopsy.
The management of AEDC has described the incident as "a deeply regrettable tragedy" and extended their condolences to Isa's family. In response to the fatality, the company has pledged to enhance safety measures and improve training protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This incident has reignited concerns about worker safety at the electricity distribution company. The AEDC has previously faced criticism regarding workplace safety, with stakeholders raising issues about inadequate equipment and safety protocols for field workers.
The death highlights the hazardous nature of electrical maintenance work and underscores the importance of stringent safety standards in Nigeria's power sector, where workers routinely face significant occupational risks.
Authorities have not yet released information about any formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the electrocution incident.
