The Lagos State Government has announced an immediate suspension of planning approvals within the corridor of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project. The decision was disclosed on Monday by Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, in a statement issued at Alausa.
According to Dr. Olumide, the suspension aims to address the implications of the coastal highway project on existing and ongoing physical development frameworks in the state. The project has already affected several development plans, including the recently concluded Ode-Omi Action Area Plan, as well as the Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan and the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan, both still under development.
"As a result of the effects of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road on our Development Plans, it is germane to review the situation on ground and align it with the Development Plans to forestall any further distortion now or in the future. In this connection, it is equally important to temporarily suspend Planning Approvals in the axis until further notice," Dr. Olumide stated.
The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been directed to enforce the suspension until further instructions are provided. The commissioner emphasized the state government's commitment to maintaining a well-organised, inclusive, livable, and sustainable built environment.
Dr. Olumide added that Lagos remains positioned to fully benefit from the inter-state Coastal Highway once planning considerations are properly aligned with the project's requirements.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is a significant infrastructure project that will connect Lagos with Calabar, spanning multiple states along Nigeria's coastline. The temporary suspension of planning approvals is expected to help the state government better integrate this major highway into its urban development strategy.
