The Ogun State Government, through its Ministry of Environment, has sealed off the Ideru-Soyindo dredging site and mining company in Soyindo/Ajaka Community, Sagamu Local Government Area, for conducting illegal mining activities that threatened public health and environmental safety.
Farouk Akintunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) and Chairman of the State Task Force on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, explained that the site was closed and issued a stop work order because its operations were polluting the Ibu river, a critical water source for the community.
"Ideru-Soyindo dredging site was sealed off and issued a stop work order, because its activities was capable of putting the health of the people in the community in danger," Akintunde stated.
According to the environmental official, the dredging operations at the upstream of Ibu river were disrupting the functioning of the Sagamu Water Corporation Scheme located downstream. He further highlighted that beyond operating without proper authorization, the mining company had caused significant environmental degradation in the community.
In a related enforcement action, authorities also sealed PETROCAM gas station at Igbesa for violating a previous stop work order. The gas station had earlier been instructed to halt operations for contravening Ogun State environmental laws.
These enforcement actions demonstrate the Ogun State Government's commitment to protecting environmental resources and ensuring compliance with regulations governing mining and industrial activities within the state.
