The Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, Hon James Melvin Ejeh, has announced an immediate and comprehensive ban on all logging activities within the council area. The decision comes amid growing concerns over rising insecurity and environmental degradation in the region.
In an official statement released on June 16, Chairman Ejeh explained that the ban became necessary following an alarming increase in criminal activities linked to unregulated logging operations throughout Agatu.
Security Concerns Behind the Ban
"The incessant logging has not only caused severe environmental degradation but has also provided cover for criminal elements to operate freely," Ejeh stated, describing the situation as a "grave concern" requiring urgent intervention.
Under the new directive, all logging operations within Agatu must receive direct authorization from the Chairman's office. The local government has warned that anyone found engaging in unauthorized logging activities will face strict legal consequences.
Call for Community Cooperation
Chairman Ejeh has appealed to residents to support the initiative by remaining vigilant and reporting any unauthorized logging activities to the appropriate authorities. He emphasized that community cooperation is essential for restoring peace, protecting natural resources, and ensuring long-term security in the area.
This development comes at a time when several communities in Benue State have been experiencing security challenges. The state government has been implementing various measures to address these concerns, with local authorities now taking more targeted approaches to specific issues affecting their jurisdictions.
The ban on logging in Agatu represents a significant step in addressing both environmental and security challenges simultaneously, potentially setting a precedent for other local governments facing similar issues.
